1 Peter 5:8-9 in Polish

1 List świętego Piotra 5:8-9

Selected reading

1 Peter 5:8-9 is reproduced below in Polish, version Biblia Tysiąclecia, and translated into English according unto the same Polish. The English renderings of the Polish are the same as those wherefor precedents were set in the study related to the books of Moses, except in the case of Polish vocabulary appearing for the first time, in which case the precedent is set here.

Should the reader wish to study Polish from the basics with full language commentary, he is invited to begin his study at Rdz 1. He may visit Biblia Tysiąclecia to read 1 List świętego Piotra 5 in its entirety. An archived version of the chapter is found here.

8 Bądźcie trzeźwi! Czuwajcie! Przeciwnik wasz, diabeł, jak lew ryczący krąży szukając kogo pożreć.

Bądźcie trzeźwi! (be ye alert). Czuwajcie! (watch ye). Przeciwnik wasz, diabeł (your adversary the devil), jak lew ryczący (as a roaring lion) krąży (goeth about) szukając (in seeking) kogo pożreć (whom to devour).

Be ye alert! Watch ye! Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about in seeking whom to devour.

Vocabulary: trzeźwy (alert), czuwać (impf., to watch), przeciwnik (m., adversary), diabeł (m., devil), jak (as), lew (m., lion), ryczeć (impf., to roar), krążyć (impf., to go about), szukać (impf., to seek), kto (who), pożreć (pf., to devour).

Notes: Bądźcie and czuwajcie are second-person plural imperatives, whence the inclusion of ye in their English renderings. This inclusion of ye is, of course, optional, but it serves to remove all doubt in the question of grammatical number. Related vocabulary readings: diabeł (devil; Mt 4:1-11); lew (lion; Prz 19:12). The imperfective verb ryczeć (to roar) is related to the masculine noun ryk (roar), met with at Prz 19:12 (follow the link for lew above). Another instance of przeciwnik is found at Wj 15:7.

9 Mocni w wierze przeciwstawcie się jemu! Wiecie, że te same cierpienia ponoszą wasi bracia na świecie.

Mocni w wierze (mighty in faith) przeciwstawcie się jemu! (resist ye him). Wiecie (ye know), że te same cierpienia (that these same sufferings) ponoszą (are they bearing) wasi bracia (your brethren) na świecie (in the world).

Mighty in faith resist ye him! Ye know that these same sufferings are your brethren in the world bearing.

Vocabulary: mocny (mighty), wiara (f., faith), przeciwstawić się (pf., to resist), wiedzieć (impf., to know), sam (same), cierpienie (n., suffering), ponosić (impf., to bear), brat (m., brother), świat (m., world).

Notes: In locative position, wiara takes the form wierze. Jemu is dative; literally, unto him. Regarding wasi, the reader may wish to consult the declension of Polish possessive pronouns.

On a final note: 1 List św. Piotra is read aloud pierwszy list świętego Piotra (first letter of Saint Peter). The Polish for letter is the masculine noun list; for Peter, the Polish is Piotr.
