Numbers 8 in Friulian

The eighth chapter of the book of Numbers treats of: lis lampadis dal cjandelîr (the lamps of the lampstand); la consacrazion dai levits (the consecration of the Levites).

Versets 1-4

Verses 1-2: Jahve i fevelà a Mosè e i disè (Yahweh spoke unto Moses and said unto him): fevelii a Aron e dîsii (speak unto Aaron and say unto him): cuant che tu metarâs lis siet* lampadis (when thou wilt put the seven lamps), lis siet lampadis a àn di butâ la lûs denant dal cjandelîr (the seven lamps are to cast their light before the lampstand). — *The Friulian for seven is siet. Numerous examples employing siet have hitherto been encountered: siet spîs (seven spikes); siet dîs (seven days); siet voltis (seven times); siet viaçs (seven times); siet agns (seven years); siet pioris (seven ewes); siet fiis (seven daughters); siet lampadis (seven lamps). Verse 3: Aron al fasè cussì (Aaron did so): al sistemà lis lampadis in mût che a fasessin lûs denant dal cjandelîr (he installed the lamps that they might make light before the lampstand), come che il Signôr i veve ordenât a Mosè (as the Lord had ordered Moses).

Verse 4: Il cjandelîr al jere fat cussì (the lampstand was made so): al jere d’aur rût ribatût (it was of pure sticken gold), dal so tronc ai siei bocui al jere dut un toc ribatût (from its trunk unto its buds was it all one stricken piece). Mosè al veve fat il cjandelîr (Moses had made the lampstand) seont il stamp che il Signôr i veve mostrât (according unto the likeness which the Lord had shown him).

Verses 5-6: Il Signôr i fevelà a Mosè e i disè (the Lord spoke unto Moses and said unto him): cjol i levits framieç dai fîs di Israel e smondeiju* (take the Levites from amongst the sons of Israel and cleanse them). — *Review the following change of e to i in the Friulian second-person singular imperative: smondee; smondeiju (cleanse {thou}; cleanse {thou} them); fevele; fevelii (speak {thou}; speak {thou} unto him); torne; tornijal (return {thou}; return {thou} it unto him); mene; meninusal (lead {thou}; lead {thou} him unto us).

Verse 7: Tu ju smondearâs cussì (thou shalt cleanse them so): tu ju sborfarâs cu l’aghe* de espiazion (thou shalt sprinkle them with the water of expiation); a fasaran passâ il rosôr sun dut il cuarp (they shall make the razor pass upon all their body), a lavaran la lôr munture (shall wash their raiment) e si smondearan (and shall cleanse themselves). — *Related reading: On the Friulian noun aghe, meaning ‘water’.

Verse 8: Po a cjolaran un manzut (then they shall take a bullock) cu la solite oblazion di farine di flôr tocjade tal vueli (with the usual oblation of fine flour touched in oil) e tu cjolarâs un altri manzut pal sacrifici di espiazion (and thou shalt take another bullock for the sacrifice of expiation).

Verse 9: Tu clamarâs dongje i levits denant de tende de cunvigne (thou shalt call alongside the Levites before the tent of the convocation) e tu clamarâs a semblee dute la comunitât dai fîs di Israel (and shalt call unto assembly all the community of the sons of Israel).

Verse 12: Podopo i levits a metaran lis mans sul cjâf dai manzuts (thereupon the Levites shall put their hands on the head of the bullocks) e tu jai ufrissarâs al Signôr (and thou shalt offer them unto the Lord), un a mût di sacrifici di espiazion (the one as a sacrifice of expiation) e un a mût di olocaust (and the one as a holocaust), par fâ la funzion di espiazion pai levits (to make the function of expiation for the Levites).

Verse 13: Tu fasarâs stâ i levits denant di Aron e denant dai siei fîs (thou shalt make the Levites dwell before Aaron and before his sons) e tu ju presentarâs tant che une ufierte di scjassâle in onôr dal Signôr (and shalt present them as an offering which is shaken in honour of the Lord).

Verse 18: O ài cjolt i levits impen di ducj i prins fîs dai israelits: I have taken the Levites in place of all the first sons of the Israelites.

Verse 19: O ài ufiert a Aron e ai siei fîs i levits (I have offered unto Aaron and his sons the Levites), framieç dai fîs di Israel (from amongst the sons of Israel), par che a fasin la funzion di espiazion pai fîs di Israel (that they may make the function of expiation for the sons of Israel) in câs che i fîs di Israel si sdongjin dal santuari (in the case where the sons of Israel draw alongside the sanctuary).

Versets 20-22

Verse 21: I levits si smondearin e a lavarin la lôr munture (the Levites cleansed themselves and washed their raiment); Aron ju presentà tant che une ufierte che si le scjasse denant dal Signôr (Aaron presented them as an offering which one shaketh before the Lord) e al fasè l’espiazion par lôr, par smondeâju (and made expiation for them, to cleanse them).

Verse 22: Podopo i levits si presentarin (thereupon the Levites presented themselves) a fâ la lôr vore te tende de cunvigne (to do their work in the tent of the convocation), presince di Aron e dai siei fîs ({in} presence of Aaron and his sons). Come che il Signôr i veve ordenât a Mosè a rivuart dai levits (as the Lord had ordered Moses in regard unto the Levites), cussì si fasè cun lôr (so was it done with them).
