Matthew 1:18-25 in Polish

Ewangelia według świętego Mateusza 1:18-25

Selected reading

The gospel according unto Matthew 1:18-25 treats of the birth of Jesus: narodzenie Jezusa. The reader will find this passage below, translated into English according unto the Polish, version Biblia Tysiąclecia (BT). The English renderings of the Polish are the same as those wherefor precedents were set in the study related to the books of Moses, except in the case of Polish vocabulary appearing for the first time, in which case the precedent is set here. A list of key vocabulary is found below, after the text of the verses.

Regarding the use of majuscules in this passage: The BT employs the majuscule in pronouns which refer to the Holy Spirit, Jesus and Mary. My translation below accords unto the BT Polish, wherefore I have reproduced the use of majuscules in the English renderings. Given that the past tense of a verb in Polish is marked for gender, the Polish nowhere in this passage includes the direct equivalent of the subject pronoun she, which is ona; however, She with the majuscule is employed in the English renderings in view of this, that the text employs the following to refer to Mary, all with the majuscule: Jej (Her; possessive pronoun); (Her; object pronoun); w Niej (in Her); do Niej (unto Her). Had the Polish text included the subject pronoun to refer unto Mary, it would have been written Ona, with the majuscule, to accord with the usages listed above. A final word on this subject: the Polish swój and siebie never take the majuscule, no matter unto whom they refer; in the English renderings, their equivalents take the majuscule or the minuscule accordingly.

This passage is presented without language notes related to the Polish; should the reader wish to study Polish from the basics with language commentary, he is invited to begin his study at Rdz 1. 18 Z narodzeniem Jezusa Chrystusa było tak: with the birth of Jesus Christ it was so. Po zaślubinach Matki Jego, Maryi, z Józefem (after the espousal of His Mother Mary with Joseph), wpierw nim zamieszkali razem (before they had settled together), znalazła się brzemienną za sprawą Ducha Świętego (She was found heavy {with child} at the instance of the Holy Spirit).

19 Mąż Jej, Józef (Her husband Joseph), który był człowiekiem sprawiedliwym (who was a righteous man) i nie chciał narazić Jej na zniesławienie (and was not willing expose Her unto slander), zamierzał oddalić Ją potajemnie (would intend to put Her away in secrecy).

20 Gdy powziął tę myśl (when he had conceived this thought), oto anioł Pański ukazał mu się we śnie i rzekł (so it is that a Lordly angel appeared unto him in a dream and said): «Józefie, synu Dawida (Joseph son of David), nie bój się wziąć do siebie Maryi, twej Małżonki (fear not to take unto thyself Mary thy Wife); albowiem z Ducha Świętego jest to, co się w Niej poczęło (for from the Holy Spirit is this which is in Her conceived).

21 Porodzi Syna, któremu nadasz imię Jezus (She will bear a Son unto whom thou shalt confer the name Jesus), On bowiem zbawi swój lud od jego grzechów» (for He will deliver His people from their sins).

22 A stało się to wszystko (and all this is come to pass), aby się wypełniło słowo Pańskie (that might be carried forth the Lordly word) powiedziane przez Proroka (said by the Prophet):

23 Oto Dziewica pocznie i porodzi Syna (so it is that the Virgin will conceive and will bear a Son), któremu nadadzą imię Emmanuel (unto whom they will confer the name Emmanuel), to znaczy: „Bóg z nami” (which signifieth ‘God with us’).

24 Zbudziwszy się ze snu (in having awoken from the dream), Józef uczynił tak, jak mu polecił anioł Pański (Joseph did so as the Lordly angel had instructed him): wziął swoją Małżonkę do siebie (he took his Wife unto himself),

25 lecz nie zbliżał się do Niej, aż porodziła Syna (but he would not draw near unto Her until She had borne the Son), któremu nadał imię Jezus (unto whom he conferred the name Jesus).
