Friulian language series: Levitic 12, regulis pe parturient

The twelfth chapter of the book of Leviticus relates rules for the childbearing woman: regulis pe parturient (rules for the woman giving birth). The feminine parturient (childbearing woman, woman giving birth) is related to the verb parturî (to bear, to give birth).

Versets 1-5

Verses 1-2: Il Signôr i fevelà a Mosè e i disè (the Lord spoke to Moses and said to him): dîsiur ai fîs di Israel (say to the sons of Israel): se une femine e cjaparà sù (if a woman conceives [will take up]) e e parturissarà un mascjo (and bears [will bear] a male), e sarà soce par siet dîs (she shall be unclean for seven days); e sarà soce (she shall be unclean) come tal timp des sôs robis (as in the time of her matters*). — *menstruations

Verse 3: Sui vot dîs (on the eighth day [on the eight days]), si circuncidarà il frut (the male child shall be circumcised [one shall circumcise the male child]).

Verse 4: Po e restarà ancjemò trentetrê dîs (she shall then remain yet thirty-three days) a purificâsi dal so sanc (purifying herself of her blood); no tocjarà nissune robe sante (she shall not touch any holy matter; she shall touch no holy matter) e *no jentrarà* tal santuari (and shall not enter into the sanctuary) fin che no saran finîts i dîs de sô purificazion (until the days of her purification are [will be] finished). *No jentrarà (she shall not enter) is feminine in form; its masculine equivalent is nol jentrarà (he shall not enter).

Verse 5: Se invezit (if, on the other hand) e parturissarà une frute (she bears [will bear] a female child), e sarà soce par dôs* setemanis (she shall be unclean for two weeks), come tal timp des sôs robis (as in the time of her matters); e restarà sessantesîs dîs (she shall remain sixty-six days) a purificâsi dal so sanc (purifying herself of her blood). *Dôs is the feminine form; its masculine equivalent is doi; for instance: doi oms (two men), but dôs feminis (two women).

Verse 6: Cuant che a saran finîts i dîs de sô purificazion par un fi o par une fie (when the days of her purification for a son or for a daughter are [will be] finished), i puartarà al predi (she shall bear to the priest), biel jentrant de tende de cunvigne (right at the entrance of the tent of the convocation), un agnel di un an (a lamb of one year {of age}) a mût di olocaust (as a holocaust) e un colomp o une tortorele (and a pigeon or a turtledove) a mût di sacrifici di espiazion (as a sacrifice of expiation).

Verse 7: Il predi ju ufrissarà denant dal Signôr (the priest shall offer them before the Lord) e al fasarà par jê la funzion di espiazion (and shall do for her the act of expiation) e jê e sarà smondeade des sôs pierditis di sanc (and she shall be cleansed of her flows of blood). Cheste e je la leç a rivuart de femine (this is the law in regard to the woman) ch’e parturìs un frut o une frute (who bears a male child or female child).

Verse 8: Se *no à pussibilitât* di ufrî un agnel (if she has not the means to offer a lamb), e cjolarà dôs tortorelis o doi colomps (she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons): un pal olocaust (one for the holocaust) e chel altri pal sacrifici di espiazion (and that other for the sacrifice of expiation). Il predi al fasarà par jê la funzion di espiazion (the priest shall do for her the act of expiation) e jê e sarà smondeade (and she shall be cleansed). *No à pussibilitât: this is feminine in form; its masculine equivalent is nol à pussibilitât. In conveying the sense of the means, pussibilitât can also be expressed in the plural; for instance, from Lv 5:7: se nol à pussibilitâts di… (if he has not the means to…).
