Friulian language series: Levitic 4, sacrificis di espiazion

The fourth chapter of the book of Leviticus pertains to: sacrificis di espiazion (sacrifices of expiation). The rules thereof are described pal predi (for the priest); pe semblee (for the assembly {of Israel}); pal sorestant (for the chief) and par un dal popul (for one from amongst the people).

Verses 1-3: Il Signôr i fevelà a Mosè (the Lord spoke to Moses): dîsiur ai israelits (say to the Israelites; tell the Israelites): cuant che un om (when a man), cence savê (unwittingly [without knowing]), al va cuintri di (goes against) cualunche comandament dal Signôr (any commandment of the Lord), fasint ce che nol leve* (doing what ought not to have been done [doing that which was not going]): se chel che al à pecjât al è il predi (if he who has sinned is the priest), che al à vude la consacrazion (who has been consecrated [who has had the consecration]) e che cussì al à metût in colpe ancje il popul (and has thus brought guilt upon [put in blame] the people also), i ufrissarà al Signôr pal pecjât che al à cometût (to the Lord shall he offer for the sin that he has committed) un manzut cence pecjis (a bullock without blemish [without blemishes]), a mût di sacrifici di espiazion (as a sacrifice of expiation). *Ce che nol leve (literally, that which was not going): the sense of this is that which was not right. See also the note at verse 22 regarding the use of nol leve (masculine) and no leve (feminine).

Verse 4: Al menarà il manzut denant dal Signôr (he shall bring the bullock before the Lord) biel jentrant (right at the entrance) de tende de cunvigne (of the tent of the convocation); al metarà lis mans sul cjâf dal manzut (he shall lay his hands on the head of the bullock) e lu sacrificarà denant dal Signôr (and shall sacrifice it before the Lord).

Verses 5-6: Il predi che al à vude la consacrazion (the priest who has been consecrated [the priest who has had the consecration]) al cjaparà il sanc dal manzut (shall take the blood of the bullock) e lu puartarà dentri te tende de cunvigne (and shall bring it into the tent of the convocation); al tocjarà il dêt tal sanc (he shall dip [touch] his finger in the blood) e al fasarà siet sborfadis denant dal Signôr (and shall perform [shall do] seven dashings before the Lord) in face dal vêl dal santuari (in front of the veil of the sanctuary).

Verse 7: Al bagnarà cul sanc (he shall wet with the blood) i cuars dal altâr dai bonodôrs (the horns of the altar of pleasing odours) che a brusin denant dal Signôr (which burn before the Lord) te tende de cunvigne (in the tent of the convocation); al strucjarà ce che al vanze dal sanc (he shall pour the remainder [that which is left over] of the blood) sul çocul dal altâr dai olocauscj (on the base of the altar of pleasing odours), che al è biel jentrant (which is right at the entrance) de tende de cunvigne (of the tent of the convocation).

Verses 8-9: Podopo (thereupon), dal manzut dal sacrifici di espiazion (from the bullock of the sacrifice of expiation), al tirarà vie dut il gras (he shall remove all the fat), il gras torator dai budiei (the fat about the entrails), dut ce che al è parsore vie (all that which is over top), i doi rognons cul lôr gras (the two kidneys with their fat) e cul gras torator dai ombui (and with the fat about the loins) e dal fiât (and {about} the liver), che lu distacarà parsore dai rognons (which he shall sever above the kidneys).

Verse 10: Al fasarà come che si fâs pal manzut dal sacrifici di comunion (he shall do as is done with the bullock [for the bullock] of the sacrifice of communion) e al brusarà dut sul altâr dai olocauscj (and shall burn the whole on the altar of burnt offerings).

Verses 11-12: Ma la piel dal manzut (but the hide of the bullock), la cjar e dut il cjâf (its flesh and its entire head), i budiei, lis talpis e la porcarie (its entrails, legs and filth), ven a stâi dut il manzut (which is to say, the whole bullock), lu puartarà fûr dal campament (shall he carry forth from the camp), tun lûc mont (to a clean place [into a clean place]), là che a butin lis cinisis (where the ashes are cast [where they cast the ashes]), e lu brusarà sui lens (and he shall burn it upon the wood [upon the {pieces of} wood]): al varà di jessi brusât sul grum des cinisis (it shall be burnt on the ash heap [on the heap of the ashes]).

Verse 13: Se dute la semblee di Israel e à pecjât cence savê (if the whole assembly of Israel has sinned unwittingly [without knowing]), e la robe e je restade platade denant de comunitât (and the matter has remained hidden before the community) seben che a son lâts cuintri di un comandament dal Signôr (even though they have gone against a commandement of the Lord) fasint ce che nol leve (doing what ought not to have been done [doing that which was not going]), a son in stât di pecjât (they are in a state of sin).

Verse 14: Cuant che si vignarà a savê il pecjât che a àn fat (when the sin that they have committed becomes known [when one will come to know the sin that they have done]), la semblee e ufrissarà a mût di sacrifici di espiazion un manzut (the assembly shall offer a bullock as a sacrifice of expiation), un cjâf di besteam grant cence pecjis (a beast without blemish from the herd [a head of large beast without blemishes]), e lu menarà denant de tende de cunvigne (and shall bring it before the tent of the convocation).

Verse 15: I anzians de comunitât (the elders of the community) a metaran lis mans sul cjâf dal manzut (shall lay their hands on the head of the bullock) e si lu sacrificarà denant dal Signôr (and it shall be sacrificed before the Lord [and one shall sacrifice it before the Lord).

Verses 16-17: Il predi che al à vude la consacrazion (the consecrated priest [the priest who has had the consecraction]) al puartarà il sanc dal manzut dentri de tende de cunvigne (shall bring the blood of the bullock into the tent of the convocation); al tocjarà il dêt tal sanc (he shall dip [touch] his finger in the blood) e al fasarà siet sborfadis denant dal Signôr in face dal vêl (and shall perform [shall do] seven dashings before the Lord in front of the veil).

Verse 18: Al bagnarà cul sanc (he shall wet with the blood) i cuars dal altâr (the horns of the altar) che al è denant dal Signôr (which is before the Lord) te tende de cunvigne (in the tent of the convocation) e al strucjarà ce che al vanze dal sanc (and shall pour the remainder [that which is left over] of the blood) sul çocul dal altâr dai olocauscj (on the base of the altar of burnt offerings), biel jentrant (right at the entrance) te tende de cunvigne (in the tent of the convocation).

Verse 19: I tirarà vie al manzut dut il gras (he shall remove all the fat from the bullock), par brusâlu sul altâr (so as to burn it on the altar).

Verse 20: Al fasarà di chest manzut (he shall do with this bullock [he shall make of this bullock]) compagn di chel ufiert in sacrifici di espiazion (just as is done with the offering for the sacrifice of expiation [the same as that offering in sacrifice of expiation]): dut precîs edentic (all things just alike). Il predi al fasarà par lôr une funzion di espiazion (the priest shall perform [shall do] an act of expiation for them) e il pecjât al sarà perdonât (and the sin shall be forgiven).

Verse 21: Po al puartarà il manzut fûr dal campament (he shall then carry the bullock out of the camp) e lu brusarà come che al à brusât il prin (and shall burn it just as he burnt the first): al è un sacrifici di espiazion de semblee (it is a sacrifice of expiation of the assembly).

Versets 22-26

Verses 22-23: Se chel che al à pecjât al è un sorestant (if he who has sinned is a chief), che cence savê al è lât cuintri di un comandament dal Signôr so Diu (who, unwittingly [without knowing], has gone against a commandment of the Lord his God) fasint une robe che no leve* (doing what ought not to have been done [doing a thing that was not going]), cuant che al vignarà a cognossi il pecjât che al à fat (when he comes [will come] to know the sin that he has committed [has done]), al puartarà come ufierte un bec mascjo cence pecjis (as an offering shall he bring a male goat without blemish [without blemishes]). *Note the use here of the feminine no leve, to agree with the feminine robe; compare with the masculine nol leve, from verses 2 and 13, to agree with ce che.

Verse 24: Al metarà lis mans sul cjâf dal bec (he shall lay his hands on the head of the goat) e lu sacrificarà tal lûc (and shall sacrifice it in the place) che si sacrifichin i olocauscj denant dal Signôr (where the burnt offerings are sacrificed before the Lord): al è un sacrifici di espiazion (it is a sacrifice of expiation).

Verse 25: Il predi al cjaparà sù cul dêt il sanc dal sacrifici di espiazion (with his finger shall the priest take {some of} the blood of the sacrifice of expiation) e al bagnarà i cuars dal altâr dai olocauscj (and shall wet the horns of the altar of burnt offerings): al strucjarà ce che al vanze dal sanc (he shall pour the remainder [that which is left over] of the blood) sul çocul dal altâr dai olocauscj (on the base of the altar of burnt offerings).

Verse 26: Po al brusarà sul altâr dut ce che al è gras (he shall then burn on the altar all that which is fat), compagn dal gras dal sacrifici di comunion (just like the fat of the sacrifice of communion). Il predi al fasarà par lui une funzion di espiazion (the priest shall perform [shall do] an act of expiation for him) e il pecjât i sarà perdonât (and the sin shall be forgiven him).

Verse 29: Al metarà la man sul cjâf de vitime (he shall lay his hand on the head of the victim) e le sacrificarà tal lûc che si sacrifichin i olocauscj (and shall sacrifice it in the place where the burnt offerings are sacrificed).

Verse 30: Il predi al cjaparà sù cul dêt un sclip dal so sanc (the priest shall take a bit of its blood with his finger) e al bagnarà i cuars dal altâr dai olocauscj (and shall wet the horns of the altar of burnt offerings); po al strucjarà ce che al vanze dal sanc sul çocul dal altâr (he shall then pour the remainder [that which is left over] of the blood on the base of the altar).

Verse 32: Se al puarte une piore come ufierte di espiazion (if he brings a sheep as his offering of expiation), al à di puartâ une mascje cence pecjis (he is to bring a female without blemish [without blemishes]).

Verse 33: Al metarà la man sul cjâf de vitime (he shall put his hand on the head of the victim) e le sacrificarà pal so pecjât (and shall sacrifice it for his sin) tal lûc che si sacrifichin i olocauscj (in the place where the burnt offerings are sacrificed).

Verse 35: Al tirarà vie dut il gras (he shall remove all its fat), come che si tire vie il gras de piore dal sacrifici di comunion (just as the fat is removed from the sheep of the sacrifice of communion), e il predi lu brusarà parsore des vitimis consumadis dal fûc (and the priest shall burn it over the victims consumed by fire) in onôr dal Signôr (in honour of the Lord). Il predi al fasarà par lui une funzion di espiazion (the priest shall perform [shall do] for him an act of expiation) e il pecjât che al à cometût i sarà perdonât (and the sin that he has committed shall be forgiven him).
