Polish language series: Wj 17, wyprowadzenie wody

In the seventeenth chapter of the book of Exodus, the Israelites thirst for water in the desert; Moses brings forth for them to drink by the stroke of his rod. From the subject lines: wyprowadzenie wody ze skały (the bringing forth of the water from the rock); zwycięstwo nad Amalekitami (victory over the Amalekites).

Verse 1: Całe zgromadzenie Izraelitów: the entire congregation of Israelites. Na rozkaz Pana: at the Lord’s command. Aby przebyć dalsze etapy: in order to go by continued stages; that is, in order to continue by stages. Rozbić obóz: to set up camp, to encamp. W Refidim, gdzie lud nie miał wody do picia: at Rephidim, where the people did not have (were not having) water to drink; the neuter picie is formed form the imperfective pić. Do picia can be taken literally as for (the) drinking.

Verse 2: Kłócił się lud z Mojżeszem: the people quarrelled (were quarrelling) with Moses. Daj nam wody do picia: give us water to drink. Czemu kłócicie się ze mną?: why do you quarrel (why are you quarrelling) with me? Wystawiać na próbę is to be taken as meaning to put to the test, to try; Moses says: czemu wystawiacie Pana na próbę? (why do you try [why are you trying] the Lord?; why do you put [why are you putting] the Lord to the test?).

Verse 3: Ale lud pragnął tam wody: but the people thirsted (were thirsting) for water. Szemrać przeciw: to repine against. Wydać na śmierć can be taken as meaning to lead to (one’s) death; the people say to Moses: czy po to wyprowadziłeś nas z Egiptu (was it for this that you brought us forth from Egypt), aby nas, nasze dzieci i nasze bydło wydać na śmierć (in order to lead us, our children and our cattle to death) z pragnienia? (from thirst?).

Verse 4: Co mam uczynić z tym ludem?: what must I do with this people? Niewiele brakuje, a ukamienują mnie: before long they will stone me; taken literally, niewiele brakuje translates as not much is lacking (that is, not much time is lacking).

Verse 5: Wyjdź przed lud: come out before the people. Weź kilku ze starszych Izraela ze sobą: take some of the elders of Israel with you. Weź w rękę laskę, którą uderzyłeś Nil: take in hand the rod with which you struck the Nile.

Verse 6: Oto Ja stanę przed tobą na skale: see, I shall stand before you on the rock. Na Horebie: at Horeb. Uderzysz w skałę: you shall strike the rock. The declension of skała is presented below. Wypłynie z niej woda: water shall flow out of it. Lud zaspokoi swe pragnienie: the people shall quench their thirst. Na oczach starszyzny izraelskiej: in the sight of the elders of Israel (Israelite elders).

Verse 7: Czy też Pan jest rzeczywiście wśród nas, czy nie?: is the Lord indeed amongst us or not?

Verse 9: Jozue: Joshua; Mojżesz powiedział wtedy do Jozuego: Moses then said to Joshua. Wyruszyć na walkę is to be taken as meaning to go into battle; Moses says to Joshua: wybierz sobie mężów (choose men for yourself) i wyruszysz z nimi na walkę (and go into battle with them) z Amalekitami (against the Amalekites; literally, with the Amalekites). Na szczycie góry: at the top of the mountain.

Verse 10: Jozue spełnił polecenie Mojżesza: Joshua fulfilled the command of Moses. Wyruszył do walki z Amalekitami: they went into battle against the Amalekites. Chur: Hur.

Verse 11: Mieć przewagę is to be taken as meaning to prevail, to have the advantage. Jak długo Mojżesz trzymał ręce podniesione do góry (as long as Moses kept [was keeping] his hands raised towards the mountain), Izrael miał przewagę (Israel prevailed [was prevailing]); that is, whenever Moses would keep his hands raised towards the mountain, Israel would prevail. Gdy zaś ręce opuszczał: whereas when he would let down (was letting down) his hands.

Verse 12: Gdy ręce Mojżesza zdrętwiały: when the hands of Moses grew stiff. Wzięli kamień i położyli pod niego, i usiadł na nim: they took a stone and set it under him, and he sat down upon it. Aaron and Hur supported Moses: Aaron zaś i Chur podparli jego ręce (Aaron and Hur propped up his hands). Jeden z tej, a drugi z tamtej strony: one on this (side), and the other on that side; that is, one on either side of Moses. Aż do zachodu słońca: until the setting of the sun. Były ręce jego stale wzniesione wysoko: his hands were continually raised high.

Verse 13: Pokonać Amalekitów: to defeat the Amalekites. Ostrzem miecza: by the blade of the sword.

Verse 14: Zapisz to na pamiątkę w księgę: enter this in remembrance in the book. Wyryć w pamięci is to be taken as meaning to engrave in one’s memory: wyryj to w pamięci Jozuego (engrave this in Joshua’s memory). Zgładzę zupełnie pamięć o Amalekicie pod niebem: I shall utterly wipe out the memory of the Amalekites under the heaven.

Verse 15: Zbudować ołtarz: to build an altar.

Verse 16: Ponieważ podniósł rękę na tron Pana (because he [Amalek] raised his hand against the throne of the Lord), dlatego trwa wojna Pana z Amalekitą z pokolenia w pokolenie (the war of the Lord against the Amalekites therefore endures from generation to generation).
