Verse 1: God says to Jacob: idź do Betel i tam zamieszkaj (go to Bethel and dwell there). Wznieś też tam ołtarz Bogu (erect also an altar there to the God), który ci się ukazał (who appeared to you), gdy uciekałeś przed twym bratem Ezawem (when you were fleeing before your brother Esau).

Verse 2: Rzekł więc Jakub do swych domowników (so Jacob said to his domestics) i do wszystkich, którzy z nim byli (and to all who were with him): usuńcie spośród was (remove from amongst you) [wizerunki] obcych bogów (the likenesses of foreign gods), jakie macie (in your possession [that you have]); oczyśćcie się i zmieńcie szaty (purify yourselves and change your garments).

Verse 3: Pójdziemy bowiem do Betel (for we will go to Bethel) i tam zbuduję ołtarz Bogu (and will build there an altar to the God), który wysłuchał mnie w czasie mej niedoli (who heeded me in my time of distress [in the time of my distress]) i wspomagał mnie, gdziekolwiek byłem (and assisted me wherever I was).

Verse 4: Oddali więc Jakubowi (they handed over to Jacob) wszystkie [wizerunki] obcych bogów (all the likenesses of foreign gods), jakie posiadali (in their possession [that they were possessing]), oraz kolczyki, które nosili w uszach (as well as the rings that were in their ears [that they were wearing in their ears]), i Jakub zakopał je pod terebintem (and Jacob buried them under the terebinth) w pobliżu Sychem (near Shechem [in the vicinity of Shechem]).

Verse 5: A gdy wyruszyli w drogę (and as they headed on their way), padł wielki strach na okoliczne miasta (a great terror fell upon the surrounding cities), tak że nikt nie ścigał synów Jakuba (so that no one pursued [was pursuing] the sons of Jacob).

Verses 6-7: Jakub, przybywszy wraz ze wszystkimi swymi ludźmi do Luz w Kanaanie, czyli do Betel (Jacob, having come along with all his people to Luz in Canaan, which is to say, Bethel), zbudował tam ołtarz (built an altar there to God) i nazwał to miejsce El-Betel (and named the place El-Bethel). Tu bowiem ukazał mu się Bóg (for it was here that God had appeared to him), kiedy uciekał przed swym bratem (when he was fleeing before his brother). Kanaan is found here in locative position as Kanaanie. You may wish to learn the names of a number of countries of the contemporary world alongside their locative form; I have limited myself here to the names of twelve, in alphabetical order, following that of Poland: Polska (f., Poland; loc., Polsce), Argentyna (f., Argentina; loc., Argentynie), Australia (f., Australia; loc., Australii), Brazylia (f., Brazil; loc., Brazylii), Chiny (pl., China; loc., Chinach), Francja (f., France; loc., Francji), Kanada (f., Canada; loc., Kanadzie), Rosja (f., Russia; loc., Rosji), Stany Zjednoczone (pl., United States; loc., Stanach Zjednoczonych), Ukraina (f., Ukraine; loc., Ukrainie), Włochy (pl., Italy; loc., Włoszech), Zjednoczone Królestwo (n., United Kingdom; loc., Zjednoczonym Królestwie).

Verse 8: Wtedy to zmarła Debora, piastunka Rebeki (it was then that Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died), i pochowano ją w pobliżu Betel pod terebintem (and she was buried [one buried her] near Bethel [in the vicinity of Bethel] under the terebinth), który dlatego otrzymał nazwę Terebint Płaczu (which was therefore named [which therefore received the name] Terebinth of Weeping).

Verses 9-10: Bóg ukazał się jeszcze Jakubowi (God appeared again to Jacob) po jego powrocie z Paddan-Aram (after his return from Paddan-Aram) i błogosławiąc mu (and upon blessing him) powiedział do niego (said to him): imię twe jest Jakub (your name is Jacob), ale odtąd nie będą cię zwać Jakubem (but you shall henceforth not be called Jacob [but they shall henceforth not be calling you Jacob]), lecz będziesz miał imię Izrael (rather you shall be called Israel [but you shall be having the name Israel]). I tak otrzymał imię Izrael: and thus was he named Israel (and thus did he receive the name Israel).

Verse 11: Po czym Bóg rzekł do niego (thereupon God said to him): Ja jestem Bóg wszechmocny (I am God Almighty). Bądź płodny i rozmnażaj się: be fertile and multiply. Niechaj powstanie z ciebie naród i wiele narodów (may a nation, yea many nations, arise from you), i niechaj królowie zrodzą się z ciebie (and may kings issue from you). Consider the following (singular; plural): bądź płodny i rozmnażaj się (current verse); bądźcie płodni i rozmnażajcie się (Rdz 1:28).

Verse 12: Kraj, który dałem Abrahamowi i Izaakowi (the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac), daję tobie (I give to you); i twemu przyszłemu potomstwu dam ten kraj (and to your future offspring will I give this land).

Verse 13: Potem Bóg oddalił się od niego (God then withdrew from him) z tego miejsca (at the place [from this place]), na którym do niego przemawiał (where he had spoken to him [in which he was speaking to him]).

Verse 14: A Jakub ustawił stelę (and Jacob set up a pillar [stele]) na tym miejscu (at the place [in this place]), gdzie Bóg do niego mówił (where God had spoken to him [where God was speaking to him]), stelę kamienną (a pillar of stone [a stonen stele]). I składając ofiarę płynną wylał na nią oliwę: and putting forth a libation (liquid offering), he poured oil (olive oil) upon it.

Verse 15: Jakub dał więc temu miejscu (Jacob therefore gave the place [therefore gave to this place]), na którym przemawiał do niego Bóg (where God had spoken to him [in which God was speaking to him]), nazwę Betel (the name Bethel).
